Persian Gulf
Persian Gulf is located in Indian Ocean. It is also known as Al-Khalij al-arabi; Arabian Gulf; Gulf of Iran or Persian-Arabian Gulf and area is 230.000 square Kilometer. The Kidney-Shaped Persian Gulf and the surrounding areas contain more than half the world's proven reserves of petroleum and natural gas, and new reserves are still being found, both on land and offshore. The gulf is strategically located between Iran on the northeast and the Arabian Peninsula on the southwest Large amounts of oil are refined in the area , and oil tankers carry oil from marine terminals to all parts of the world.
Many ports on the Persian Gulf are involved with the petroleum industry including Kuwait, Basra, Ad Dammam, and Manama.Major oil spills in 1983 during the Iran-Iraq conflict, and in 1991 during the Gulf War, have damaged the environment, as has oil pollution from routine tanker operations.
The Persian Gulf extends northwest 965 kilometers from the Strait of Hormuz to Shatt Al-Arab, a river formed by the confluence of the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. Varying in width from 47 to 370 kilometers the shallow gulf drops to just 102 meters.
